Joan STEIN (GOODWIN-WILSON)
With great sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Joan Stein at her home on January 20, 2025, at the age of 87.
Surrounded by her children, she left this world on her own terms, peacefully and with grace. She leaves us a legacy of love, respect and precious memories that will be cherished always.
She was the wife of the late Marvin ‘Mickey’ Stein, daughter of the late Ralph Goodwin-Wilson and the late Betty Villiers. She is survived by her children James (Nancy McHarg), Robert (Paula Petrus), Anna (Neal Merker), Danny (Brigitte Carriere) and Adam (Erika Adderley). She leaves behind fifteen beautiful grandchildren, Eirik (Marie), Sam, Mickey, Natasha, Sara, Tor, Liv, Ava, Tea, Georgia, Gabriel, Davos, Olivia, Emma Joan, and Liam. She will be missed by so many good friends, in particular Patty Belec and Corinne Whitehouse.
Joan was raised in Guelph, Ontario and left home when she was 16 to take the Canadian Ski Instructors’ Alliance (CSIA) course. She became one of its youngest members, and later one of the first four women ski instructors to be hired by Ernie McCullough at Mont-Tremblant. Her athleticism and exceptional people skills laid the foundation for a life of leadership and accomplishment in the emerging ski industry.
Alongside her husband, Mickey, Joan was an instrumental contributor in the building of Mont-Habitant. She took over the ski school, ski shop and ski rental businesses in 1960. Additionally, she was the first female ski school director in Canada, and the second in the history of skiing. At Mont Habitant, she created an innovative 12 weekend ski “camp” for children of all ages and abilities. Her program became the model and standard for children’s programs across Canada. An astute business woman with exceptional people skills, Joan continued supporting the Mont Habitant family until the very end.
Her numerous contributions to the ski world will be etched in the history of skiing. In the hearts and souls of everyone who knew her, most especially those who called her mother, grandmother and friend, Joan’s wisdom, guidance and friendship will be cherished forevermore.
The family would like to thank the CLSC Piedmont – Palliative Care team, including Valerie Noel and Dr. Pelletier for their exceptional care and empathy.
For those who would like to make a contribution in honour of Joan Stein, please direct your donations to Canadian Adaptive Snowsports (CADS) https://cads.ski/en/donate
A celebration of life will be held in the near future, the details of which will be communicated to all the people whose lives she touched.
