Mikarl (Mike) Loken died peacefully at Sainte-Agathe Hospital on January 18, 2023 at the age of 98, after a short courageous battle with pneumonia. He will be missed by all who knew him, and remembered fondly for his athleticism, his love of the outdoors and a twinkle in his eye.
Mike immigrated to Canada from Norway in 1953 and settled in Montreal where he met his beloved wife of 49 years, Ann Sceresini. They created a wonderful family life in Town of Mount Royal and at the cottage in Sainte-Anne-des-Lacs. A man of immense loyalty and integrity, Mike was an accountant who symbolized the values of his profession. He particularly loved his career at Picker X-ray Engineering where he ended his 29 year tenure as Secretary Treasurer.
An avid cross-country skier and outdoorsman Mike and Ann built their retirement home in 1988 where their cottage once stood, and enjoyed the outdoor life they treasured. Mike’s energy went into building and maintaining a network of cross-county ski trails of which, the ‘Loken Trail’, is widely recognized.. Mike is suitably dubbed the “Jackrabbit” of Sainte-Anne-des-Lacs. His tireless volunteer efforts in the promotion and development of cross country ski trails resulted in his induction to the Laurentian Ski Hall of Fame in 2011.
Mike is survived by his son Martin (Barbara Radelet) of Vancouver, daughter Kristina (Karen Johnston) of Calgary, grandson Logan Middleton of Calgary, sister Anne Marie and a multitude of nephews and nieces in Norway. Mike was predeceased by his daughter Lisa in 1978, his son-in-law Paul Middleton in 1998, his wife Ann in 2005, and 3 brothers and 1 sister in Norway. A Celebration of Life will be held this coming summer.
Many thanks to the doctors and caregivers at Sainte-Agathe Hospital who provided exceptional care in the last 2 weeks of Mike’s life.
